SAKKS Southern Cape Chapter Grow and Show Competition

The Southern Cape Chapter (SCC) has taken the initiative and started a Grow and Show Koi competition.

Purpose

  1. To have a little fun.
  2. To encourage koi keeping skills.
  3. To watch 10 koi develop over a two - three year period.
  4. To give other koi keepers an opportunity to follow the development of these fish.

Rules

  1. Showa have been chosen for this Grow and Show competition. Showa are a difficult koi to predict their development and they are full of surprises as they develop.
  2. The koi in the SCC Grow and Show competition are 18 - 20cm long.
  3. The koi are to be shown on the koi show and judged under the show rules.
  4. These Grow and Show Koi will then be judged against each other and the best 3 will get the prizes. In addition the SCC will also source prizes for a "lucky draw" for the remainder of the contestants.
  5. Members who entered this competition have to show their fish for two years.
  6. Each participant has to photograph and measure the koi he has selected every 4 months and publish the grow and development on the SAKKS website.
  7. The prizes for the top three at the 2013 Show will be cash prizes from the "profit" the chapter made on the fish when they first bought them.
  8. Prizes at the 2014 show will be sourced closer to that show.

Process

  1. 10 members of the Society purchased the koi from the Chapter at a small profit. The "profit" is committed as cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places at the first show in 2013. 3 lucky draw prizes will also be available.
  2. At the 2014 show prizes will be sourced for the same placings.
  3. The members will keep and grow the koi in their own ponds.
  4. The fish are to be placed  on the 2014 show again and prizes will be presented to the winners.
  5. A group (or should that shoal) of Showa were carefully selected by Phillip Muller to be as close to each other in quality as possible. The Showa are from Marujyu Koi Farm in Japan and were sourced from Koi @ Jungle the 2012 National Show held in Gauteng.
  6. Everyone was informed of the costs and the structure.
  7. Everyone who wanted to enter this Grow and Show bought a koi from the group and were entered into a draw.
  8. Each of the 10 Showa were photographed individually and the pictures numbered from 1 - 10.
  9. We then had our lady member draw a name and then that person drew a number. The number the entrant drew was matched to the pic and that became his or her fish.
